Software Evaluation: The Proof of Concept

The promise of Out-of-the-Box - the current mantra of many Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software suppliers - is fast implementation and fast Return on Investment (ROI).  The major assumption is that the buyer company accepts the suppliers' interpretation of industry best practices embedded in the software.  Fast implementation to achieve a company's target ROI is desirable.  There are risks, however, some triggered by inadequate prior understanding of the software capabilities before signing a contract; for instance, risks such as unplanned and unwanted cost of customizing.  In the realm of OOTB software, ideally customizing (coding) is to be avoided, although tailoring through attribute and parameter setting is acceptable ...
